Campaigning for London Mayor and Assembly officially begins

Campaigning to be Mayor of London and for seats on the London Assembly officially begins today, with 44 days remaining until in-person voting takes place on 2 May – the seventh such elections since Londonwide regional government was restored to the capital under the Greater London Authority Act (1999).

Nomination papers for the elections can be submitted from now until 4pm on 27 March and a full list of candidates will be announced the following evening in advance of the Easter holiday period.

Over six million Londoners will be eligible to vote in the first elections for Mayor and Assembly to be conducted under new rules brought in by the Conservative national government in 2022.

These require in-person electors to show an eligible form of identification – Voter ID – at polling stations before being given their ballot papers, and have imposed the First Past The Vote electoral system on the election for Mayor, replacing the traditional Supplementary Vote arrangement – a change expected to help the Conservative candidate. The system for the Assembly elections is unchanged.

To vote in the elections you must be at least 18 years old on the day they take place, live in London, be registered to vote and be a British or European Union citizen or a Commonwealth citizen who has or does not require leave to remain in the UK. British citizens who live overseas are not eligible.

Labour’s Sadiq Khan is seeking a third term as Mayor following his victories in 2016 and the Covid-delayed contest of 2021. Other candidates include Susan Hall for the Conservatives, Rob Blackie for the Liberal Democrats, Zoë Garbett for the Greens and Howard Cox for Reform UK.
