Rage about roads is always with us and we are in the midst of a few outbreaks. Some are more confected than others, but claims that Transport for London has engaged in a “cover-up” over road safety statistics indirectly highlight infrequently asked questions about the city’s road safety policies.
As usual, all the media attention has been on cyclists – the “cover-up” accusation is that TfL has made much of a reduction in the number of people killed while riding bikes in order to divert attention from an increase in the number injured. As always, the well-connected cyclist lobby says the solution to the problem is yet more special lanes for bicycles.
But what if that is wrong? And what if the entire Vision Zero action plan, TfL’s strategy for eliminating deaths and serious injuries from London’s transport network, has been significantly flawed?
